Entirely of plastic, a square frame with 20 cross-pieces to which the spat adhere. Each cross-piece is at an angle of approximately 30 degrees from vertical, is 5.5cm, (2") high, and has numerous ridges to help spat collection.
Use
Oyster spat collection, usually on tidal flats.
How it is used / deployed
The trays are piled 3 to 5 high, according to the height of the tide, spat removal is either manual or automatic. Manually, the tray is placed on a metal frame and struck hard with a stick. The shock knocks the spat loose and they fall into a container. The machine does basically the same thing, in about 15 seconds per tray
Features / benefits
Recent improvements in the design make the trays stronger and longer lasting. The trays are stackable, easy to store and use. Can collect up to 7,000 oysters per tray, good return on investment. Slurry solution is not required, less labour intensive, Spat removal is quick and easy, less labour intensive. Long lasting, reusable, lower replacement costs.
